I can't believe I remembered to stop my watch. Should've run faster.

Why are my quads so sore?

Why are my quads so sore today? Have I not been stretching enough? Not enough water? Too much intensity? I know I ran 26 miles in like 14 hours Tuesday to Wednesday AM, but still. That doesn't seem that much worse than running 28 miles in 3 days at Sea Ranch, where I also ran a lot *harder* for some of those miles. Is it the soft sand I did for about a mile at TP on Tuesday that did it? The hard (but short) climb up TP[steep] yesterday morning? No one thing seems capable of making me this sore.

It's not muscle tiredness like I felt after PV/SR in my left quad. It's like, I lifted too much or sprinted too much tiredness that goes from my hip flexors all the way down to just above the knees. The ITB's aren't particularly tight. The hammies aren't sore.

Maybe I can blame it on moving my bike seat? I moved it up and forward over the weekend, which really improved my position. If anything the further forward and higher seat should be putting more work into my hamstrings, right?

What should I do to fix this? I'm thinking: lay off the super-soft surfaces for a few days, lay off the hills/take hills easy, drink lots of water, stretch, Advil (maybe). I'm running this evening and taking Friday off.

Didn't you say you descending some hills on hard surfaces or something? That might be it. They say a lot of soreness is caused by the eccentric contraction of muscles, so stuff like running downhill or landing, where your muscles are lengthening as you contract them, seem to cause soreness (at least while running. I read some study that while lifting eccentric contracts counterintuitively reduce damage while increasing the good kind of stress).

In any case, ice bath?

Mmmmaybe. But I've done that run (the downhill part of the Highland loop) a couple of times much harder than this week and didn't get so sore. It must be cumulative? At any rate, ice is a good idea.
