(Monday, 6 August) -- SIGGRAPH continues --
9 pretty chill in the morning. Legs feeling rested, but also I'm starting to feel like this week will be tough, because I don't know when I'm going to have the time to run other than in the morning, but with the drinking all night... basically I'm going to end up tired and/or feeling lamesauce.
This morning I had a really creepy old guy yell at me in a raspy gross voice "Beep beep, beep beep YEAAAAHHH!!!!!" but then later an older lady running told me I "make it [running] look easy", which probably made my day.
(Tuesday, 7 August) -- SIGGRAPH cont'd --
2 on 2 off times 10 with Steve. 12 just wasn't happening. After 6 I thought I would die, but then after 10 I *could* have done 12 but it was a good idea not to push it. The fast stuff was usually a little less than 500m, about 6.40 - 6.45 pace. Is that reasonable? I wonder how fast I do 2 on 2 off at Tech. Feeling pretty strong but the high-HR-high-turnover thing is a little disconcerting. Found out Ray's had 3 bone marrow transplants. Made me feel even slower.
(Wednesday, 8 August) -- SIGGRAPH cont'd --
Off, got up early to go to Matthew's paper talk. He did awesome. Peter cornered me and tried to convince me to work in his lab next term. Me = scared.
(Thursday, 9 August) -- SIGGRAPH cont'd --
Long run, went all over. Took the radio but was glad to ditch it when I ran into Steve about 4 miles in; all the news is super depressing these days. VdlV to San Andres to Highland, then ran into S and turned around and ended up in the Lagoon after I ditched him at his place, about 1.45. Pace was faster (8min?) with S. No big dealio.
(Friday, 10 August)
Easy going up to Cardiff, managed to run on trails a large part of the way. Slept in a bit; I'm so tired from this week. I've got to catch up somehow, but I don't know when. Legs good. I feel much, much less dead than I did at this point last week.
Ankle update: it hasn't gotten any better in the last few weeks. I wonder if something more seriously wrong happened to it and I just didn't know. Range of motion is minimal, it still hurts to move it side to side too much, especially quickly. I still pick my way along uneven ground. It's not wobbly as much as it is tender. Some swelling still. I've been icing at least once per day. Maybe I should see the trainers about it when I get back.
(Saturday, 11 August)
Wow! Got rolling today. Shit. Found myself racing some guy (clearly a tri guy, with his huge gunshow going on and shaved legs.) He must have just done a swim and/or bike workout because he was slow like molasses in January. I did the lagoon in a blistering 56.20 just trying to stay a respectful distance behind this guy. It was pretty great that sub-8 pace felt this good for over 6 miles. What a great way to leave San Diego! I wish I had 3 more weeks to train like this before XC. Ideally I would spend another couple weeks at this mileage ramping up the intensity on these shorter 7-9 mile runs. But, I'll take what I can get. Maybe the trails in Copenhagen will cooperate with this plan.
PM: 2 hour bike ride up to meet I. on 101 in Oceanside. Rode pretty damn hard, but I was grumps magee. Realised that I had only eaten ~2/3 cup yogurt and frozen raspberries for b-fast several hours before;what am I 3? I have to remember to fuel this beast.
In other news, the not sleeping well continues, but I guess I can blame it on the stress of a big trip looming and my least favorite thing: moving. Had a great dinner date with Lisa last night. I don't know what I'm going to do without her.
(Sunday, 12 August) -- Depart for Denmark
Made it back to Pasadena with only emotional scars from the redonkadonk traffic. WTF? Legs super sore from the brilliant combo of no stretching, biking, no stretching again, and sitting in traffic for 3 hours. Good job, Breeden.
AM run after I couldn't sleep past 8. So fucked up. Legs frickin' bork after yesterday. I am a dumbass. Sloooow down Huntington median to Oak Knoll. Grass muy, muy soft and annoying but at least it kept me occupied with not re-spraining my ankle. Reward: apple fritter from Mr. Donuts. Packed up bike, running shorts and spandex, and I'm off to Denmark!

total miles: 50
(goal miles: 50)

I can't believe I remembered to stop my watch. Should've run faster.

are you making a presentation at this conference?
Naw, no presentation. Just gawking.
I'm surprised the ankle hasn't settled down more. Are you still taking ibuprofen? I would say now is the time to really start doing calf raises. Nice and slow. Eccentric even! Also the ABC's with your ankle. Those should really help with range of motion. Of course you should do this before you ice and maybe before and after your runs. But yes, seeing the trainers is a good, good idea. They will probably make you use that weird blue wobble board.
it sounds like the ankle thing is kind of serious, if it's been going on for a while. i guess it's only two and a half weeks until preseason, but that still seems like a long time to be trying to train and deal with it simultaneously. any leads on what sort of injury this is?
I'm not sure. I think it's just really badly sprained, maybe I tore some tendons or something and the inflammation just won't go down? Not being able to ice it here has made me much more aware of it.
