I can't believe I remembered to stop my watch. Should've run faster.

Week 7: Settling back in again.

(Monday, 2 July)
Quote of the day: Dave - "You don't seem to have any trouble picking up old men at the beach!". Yep, I'm just minding my own business and BAM there's this old guy (well, not old, but 40-ish) running with me and he can't stop telling me about how I should do triathlons, and about how if I want to run fast I have to be doing speed work, and miles isn't enough yada yada yada. So, he may be right about upping the intensity -- that's already one of my goals for this week -- but I think miles is important, too. I got into a discussion with Dave at breakfast about good workouts, so I'm going to have to sit him down one of these days and really beat a plan out of him. In other news, I think the sore on my left heel might be getting infected, but I did manage to get it into a position in my shoes today so that it wasn't rubbing too much. Tomorrow I think I'll take my trainers down to the beach and run barefoot a little on the sand, since the tide is low in the AM this week. Legs felt all right though.

(Tuesday, 3 July)
Chilled around the lagoon a bit, the soft trail felt good on my legs. Picked it up for a few intervals but nothing too hard, I'm still amazed by how going faster actually feels EASIER than going slowly. I have to start training myself to be used to doing this. (But still baby steps -- right, Kangway?) When going downhill, my left quad started hurting again which set off some alarm bells, but I was almost home. Heel also improving. Quad hurt a bit more first part of bike ride in this AM, but then felt better. Slow on bike today (esp. Torrey Pines hill) - I'm feeling pretty tired for some reason. Didn't sleep well last night, though, so that might have something to do with it.

(Wednesday, 4 July)

Slept in, did lagoon loop to Highland. Left quad still kinda hurting, but heel has finally scabbed up. Trying to keep it real easy. (Getting the miles in so I can chill out this weekend). Hit up PB with Lisa, SO MANY PEOPLE there, it was kinda overwhelming. Got in the ocean, which was sweet. I've resolved to go swimming in the ocean for reals at some point (not just splashing around). Maybe I'll have to wait for my Pops to visit so I don't go out there alone and drown.

(Thursday, 5 July)
Low tide @ 7.27 = BEACH RUN!!!! Did beach from SB south almost all the way to Torrey Pines. Decided if I wanted to run a good 8 miles I had to go out for 38 and then head back, so that's what I did. Picked it up on the way back as much as I could, which shaved off 5 minutes from the return trip. (Felt good). Quad not complaining too much, heel fine.

I also discovered something even better than crunchy leaves -- kelp floaters. These guys are ridiculously, ridiculously satisfying. It's not really a "crunch", it's more of a "pop" or "crack". I will go to absurd lengths to land on one.

(Friday, 6 July)
Let's go over my 7 am logic. I'm thinking, I gotta run 6 miles today. Tide's low, so I should do that 6 miles on the beach I've done a couple of times before. I get going, and I'm checking my watch like, "WTF? Why am I running so slow?" and try and speed up a little. It takes me until I've gotten off the beach in 56.00 or so to realize a) "That's really slow for 6 miles, I didn't feel like I was going 9-10 minute pace" and then slowly realizing b) I DON'T LIVE AT THE BEACH!. That's right people; contrary to popular belief, I can't teleport myself to the start of my runs. It's actually about a mile and a half round trip from my house to the beach and back. Meaning, I actually ran closer to 7.5 today instead of 6.

I am such a loser.

So, my Saturday run will be blissfully short. The quads feel great, and the "extra" mileage today didn't seem to do any harm. Although, I will say I was really tired on the bike today, so I'm just going to keep that in mind for some slovenly behavior over the weekend. Speaking of which, I'm totally pumped for the arrival of Herr Doktor Meinhold, the 'Gumster, and Shapiro. I can't wait!

(Saturday, 7 July)
Chilling, worked on bikes for a while and washed my car, which it turns out is actually white not brown. Rode my first Dura-Ace grouped bike which I thought was sweet, but Ian said wasn't any better than my bike and that I was just impressed by the brand. Which is probable. Watched le Tour.

(Sunday, 8 July)
Hung out with Ian, Peter, Megumi. Ran 5 pretty hard with Ian, and man do I wish he was hurt and out of shape all the time because it was a hella good run. Lazed around, watched the Tour, and went for a bike ride (47k) with el gang around town and up to Carlsbad. The new cycling shoes are awesome even if they make my feet look like clown feet.

total mileage: 41.8
(goal mileage: 40 plus strides)

hey darlin' i miss the summer 'o fun all day rides too :). but stay strong, you're doing great. you need the summer to build a good running base for a kick ass senior year season. its just not as good once you're old like me.

My personal opinion, and of course this is always at best just a suggestion, for adding intensity during base phase is that you shouldn't worry about the pace of your base runs. Well, if anything, just worry about them being too fast. Too fast does more damage than too slow, there's no such thing as too slow. I like your call on the strides this week, and once you're ready (whenever, in a few weeks or whatever) you can start adding in that delicious tempo, but in terms of easy runs, I'd say, make sure they're easy. But again... just my opinion.

So I'm still a bit confused about this "quad" thing. Do you feel like it's sort of inflamed at all? I think you should try ice massage, using those cheap dixie cups. It's a nice addition to the roller I think. If you do it twice a day, it's like 2x5 minutes of effective icing/massage at the same time! Also with the ice you can really dig into the muscle and loosen it up, while trying to calm any sort of inflamation in there. 2x, 3x, 10x a day! whatever works for you!

So, the quad definitely felt inflamed when it first flared up, but I think that was just intense muscle-soreness. Since then, I've been rolling, icing, and stretching it a lot and it's pretty much gone away. I think it was just super sore.

And OMG I love ice-cupping. It's so good.

This has nothing to do with this particular week of training, but I want to put this here because everyone loves Katherine so they're more likely to read this.

Two Things:

1) Garrett says running.caltech.edu is shot and dead.
2) Seriously, I'm so sick of letsrun.com. Why can't we have some sort of ridiculously awesome community blog where we just talk about training/running/cycling/eating/getting fat/getting skinny/random stuff/fixing bikes/buying ridiculous training things/awesomeness.

I think we got that going a little bit when we comment on eachother's blogs, but you know, why not have something set aside purposefully? No?

I think it'd be cool, because in the end we could all discuss and agree on random stuff, or just never agree on stuff. It'd be so cool. Then if we ever reach a general consensus about stuff in the end we can just be like "Okay. Consensus: Jeff Galloway sucks."

Hells yeah! We could just do it blog-style and make all of us admins. The most important consideration is what should we name it?

kangway said...

Blog style would work great.

I also have no ideas for blog names. I think that's best left for someone creative...

Also, can we make it like a super awesome secret society where after the first however many people join we elect new people to join if they wish to do so?

Actually, I really wouldn't want to prevent people from joining this thing. I just want to make this better than the foolishness of letsrun.com where people come in and make ridiculous comments without contributing anything.
