(Monday, 3 December)
Ran down to the gym, lifted, ran back. Not sleeping well continues - I woke up at 6am today and couldn't go back to sleep. Totally lame. Maybe I should try going to bed earlier.
(Tuesday, 4 December)
Made it to 8am today, finally, but didn't feel all that much better. Took the day off to work, but ended the day in a teary, sniffly, miserable wreck. I don't know what causes this type of Matlab-induced depression, but it is bad. I should be feeling good that I only have a few more assignments, but instead I'm feeling like shit.
(Wednesday, 5 December)
Lifted, taking it relatively easy after yesterday's emotional disaster. The only thing that's good is that I made it through 9 hours last night without waking up. I feel so much better now. Lactate threshold test tomorrow.
(Thursday, 6 December)
Did treadmill test this AM. I guess I was a pretty good subject since it had a dip like it was supposed to. I felt fairly under control until my HR was about 195, and then it got tough. The speed seemed a little tougher than the numbers said, but it might have been because I'm out of season now... if anyone else wants to do this, I'm happy to assist. I was pretty dead on the cool down.
(Friday, 7 December)
Day off. Worked on applications and went to the farmer's market in Monrovia with my cooking class. Dinner at Dumpling Master was pretty great too. I am feeling substantially less stressed and bad about myself than I was last night. Running is good for my emotions I think.
(Saturday, 8 December)
LT run at the gym, 30 minutes. We put the treadmill at the dip in the graph above: 1.5% grade and 7.8mph (7.42 pace). My heart rate was well behaved; started at 180 for the first 10 minutes, moved up to 185 for the second 10, and then was upper 180s low 190s the last ten minutes. It was a little weird to be looking myself in the eyeballs while I ran. I don't know why people stand running on the treadmills in the gym. Also I was sweating *profusely* but kindly I. put the fan pointing towards me about 10 minutes in so that helped somewhat. Is it allowed to take off your shirt in the gym if you're female?
All in all I think this was great. I look forward to doing similar runs in the Arroyo or at Lacy park. I think some scenery will only help. That was really the only thing that bothered me. Now if only I could get someone on a bike to go with me and keep a really steady pace, that would be even better. Maybe I can work out a deal with Fatty McKeen where he paces me on his cyclocross bike while I run tempo, and I pace him on my scooter while he rides his time trial bike.
(Sunday, 9 December)
I was going to sit on my ass today after getting done with my cooking final (standing around all day is not usually a recipe for me wanting to run). But then I decided to go to the gym in the evening, and it was nice. Lifted and ran a bit on the north field, also ran down to the gym and back, so probably did about 5.5 total. Tortured the cat a bit and had a nice quiet dinner. Good day. Also I got rid of my fricken uncomfy bed so now I'm like, totally sleeping better.

ooooh are you doing the thing with the treadmill? fun! :)
like an actual lactate threshold test? with a blood lactate monitor?
Nice. Any chance you can attach the table? I'd like to see the values.
It wasn't an actual lactate threshold test -- sorry to get you excited. It was the treadmill test: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conconi_test
Kangway, here are the values:
(treadmill speed @1.5% grade, HR)
------------------------
6 161
6.2 173
6.4 173
6.6 178
6.8 180
7 185
7.2 184
7.4 188
7.6 190
7.8 190
8 191
8.2 194
8.4 196
8.6 198
8.8 199
9 200
9.2 201
9.4 202
9.6 203
9.8 203
10 205
And no, I'm not actually a hummingbird (as the high values at the end may indicate). My resting --ie, lying in bed and reading a book-- HR is 48.
Nice numbers. For some reason, and I may be wrong, I thought that the last few times we did this Conconi test the Karvonen method of calculating AT was fairly reliable (Max-Min)*(~0.85)+min. In your case, I would estimate your max is probably higher than you hit, maybe 210 or so. Still, 210-48 is 162, multiplied by 0.85 is 137.7 add in 48 gets us to 185.7, which is lower than your actual range.
Does anyone work in a bio lab? I think it'd be cool to somehow get funding to get a Vo2Max Machine. I'm not sure what's out there, but I think there's the CosMed K4B2 which measures gas exchange. It'd be awesome to not pay 100 dollars each to get our vo2max tested.
Then again I have no idea how much these machines cost.
they do bio here, but not physiology. i'm not sure there're any labs that'd be interested in a machine designed to test gas exchange in humans.
also, katherine's max hr is probably way higher than 210. load her up with amphetamines we'd get it up to 250 before the internal hemorrhaging in her brain finally caused her to permanently lose control of body functions
Man, I wish we had those machines too! Let's all transfer to USC or UCLA!
Well... maybe not.
But yeah that would be cool! And ignoring Mark's snide comment, I would also agree that my max HR is probably up around 210. I have definitely felt it higher than 205 before, and even have it up around 200 regularly when I'm climbing hills (with Susan, for example).
