Thus begins my last week before I have to decide about next year.
(Monday, 7 April)
Slightly extended Huntington with the gang, it was nice to have the group together. It feels like it had been a while since I'd been running with other folks. Legs feel okay, calves a little sore.
(Tuesday, 8 April)
AM workout with Ian (I totally stole him from Oxy for the day -- YES). 400/800/1200/1600, break, 250/200/150. The rest was about 1.00/2.00/4.30 then lots of rest between the fast stuff (walk/jogging the remainders of the laps). Times: 95/3.10/4.46/6.22.
How did I feel... I was a little scared at first, but I think that may have been the point of the workout. The first lap of the 1200 was terrifying, but then I relaxed and it got easier. The mile I just tried to stay positive and look on the bright side - that I only had to do 1. I didn't take the inhaler beforehand, and I definitely noticed some wheezing on the 1600, but it seemed to be exacerbated by overall tense-ness and got somewhat better when I tried to relax more.
All in all a very good workout.
(Wednesday, 9 April)
Feeling a little tired today. Ran with Masha easy 5 miles in the AM. Should get some rest today. (Also stuffed myself at lunch at the Ath with Dave... glahalahalaha.... then had to go to basketball.)
(Thursday, 10 April)
5-4-3-2-1 at Lacy, I felt so tired and worn out today, it was awful. Maybe I'm not eating well enough? I've been sleeping well. I don't know what's up. I just felt like absolute death, my legs didn't want to go, and I just felt kind of generally sleepy. I guess I should drink more water, or something. I don't know, but it's weird. Going to get lots of rest.
(Friday, 11 April)
Felt marginally better today, but still decided to only do yoga and just run a bit on the grass in my frees afterwards to get the legs ready for tomorrow. I felt okay after yoga, not as tired as yesterday, but still kinda bleh.
(Saturday, 12 April)
Multi-duals. Holy crap, I ran a 5.06. WTF? I never thought I'd run faster than a 5.10. When I got really starry eyed, I'd think, wouldn't it be great to run a 5.0-something? I'm waiting for them to announce that they had the times all wrong. Scott said my second and third laps didn't slow down that much, so that's really a good sign. His splits don't make sense to me though, they're like 80/82/82/56 which doesn't add up to 5.06 as far as I can tell so I'm not really sure what to think about that. I dominated the gal from Oxy on the last turn and then blew by her so I'll be looking out for her at conferences if I do the 1500.
After all that, I was like "eff the 5k, I'm too tired for that shit" but then I ended up running with that sweet pack (2 from Redlands, Julia from Whittier, and one other who I can't remember who it was). It was something like 6.20/6.29/6.26, which is a lot more even and respectable than the shenanigans I pulled last week. 19.54! All right! I was tired in all the same places (mile 2 mostly) but staying with the group really helped me keep my head in the game.
Be sure to vote in the poll I've just posted on the nerdjockblog.
(Sunday, 13 April)
Tried not to do anything. Legs tired, brain tired, really glad that I'm not having to work as hard on school stuff this term. I don't think I could have done work today. Every time I sat down this afternoon I just thought to myself, man, it feels good to sit down!

There is nothing to doubt about the validity of either your 5:06 or the 5th place finish. The race was tactical, and you ran a classic kicker's gambit: hang back early, move up gradually, finish with a long sprint (56s for 300m is 74.7 pace). Some people don't run well wit negative splits, but some people do. If you compare the seed times to the finish times people were all over the place. For example, you beat 4:59 seed Rueschenberg, who probably just runs better with an even pace.
Looking at the video it appears that you were 19th at 100m in, 14th at 500m in, and 11th at 900m. Other than the finish there's no footage of the last lap so we can't get an accurate split for your last 300m, but even with 200m left you looked like you were already flying. I think if anything your 300 was actually faster than 56. It was hard to see where the finish line was unless you were standing right near it, and all day long I was getting the finish times wrong from the infield.
So congrats. It was an awesome race.
Rad Breeden - 5th and 7th is no joke. Looks like you're peaking at the right time. I say do the double unless you really really want to focus on the 5k (I don't think there's a reason to run only the 1500). But you have a chance to get top 6 in two events and that's awesome. I think you have a slightly better chance of placing higher in the 1500 based on your improvement arc, plus the 1500 is an inherently superior event in my opinion.
Augh... I am such a lazy bum. I wish Scott still kicked my ass.
