I can't believe I remembered to stop my watch. Should've run faster.

Making up a schedule

1)

2) I decided to stop numbering my weeks. I'm not on a season/school schedule anymore, so let freedom ring!
3) I'm proposing the following framework for my training:

Monday: medium long ride (starting at 50-60, increasing as I get used to being on the bike again)
Tuesday: AM run, PM easy ride while Ian does the RB ride
Wednesday: medium long ride
Thursday: easy shorter ride (3 hours or less, like chantry or something)
Friday: AM long run
Saturday or Sunday: long epic ride, the other day off

What do y'all think?

(Monday, 30 June)
Big T. It was kind of amazing that I'd never done this ride before. I left a little too late; it got pretty warm by the end. But it didn't bother me too much. Come to think of it, it was a pretty eventful ride! First I got buzzed by the Google Street View car in La Crescenta (I'll let you know if I get posted on the website). Then I got eaten by what I think are deerfly or horsefly (thanks for the ID, Kangway) all the way up past the bridge. I was very glad for the water up at Clear Creek. When I got back to La Canada, some geezer crossing the street in front of me at a red light crabbily told me "It's too hot to be outside, kid" like super belligerently. I was so taken aback, I decided to "kill him with kindness" as it were. I replied happily that it felt great to me outside, to which he said "eh?" in this crazy-crotchety voice. Dude.

Also, I wore a HR monitor and here are my observations.
130 - 145 really easy
145-155 on flats, this is actually starting to feel like I'm working, but on hills this is super easy (?)
155-160 on a hill, this feels pretty moderate and sustainable
160-170 on a hill, this feels like I'm starting to work, but sustainable for ~30 minutes or so (LT?)
170+ feels like I'm really working, sustainable for ~10-15 minutes

So, all my HRs are lower than they would be for the same perceived effort if I was running. 160-170 felt like 180-190 if I was running, 170+ felt like 195+ if I was running. Does this make sense?

(Tuesday, 1 July)
Rode a couple of hours easy with Kangway, which was delightful. The sitbones are a little sore today. The Rosebowl ride was pretty fun to spectate! The knee didn't bother me today.

(Wednesday, 2 July)
Rode out towards GMR with Ben and John. Got an early start this morning, which was really key. I basically just drafted the whole time. When we got to GMR I decided to just ride out onto Foothill for a while, because my HR on the ride over was getting a little high (165) for long term comfort. Then I turned around and had a pit stop at the equestrian center. Rode ~2.5 miles up GMR and decided I'd missed J&B, so I turned around. Then they caught me around Azusa, so I guess I was wrong. :) We had a lovely ride back, I got to draft a lot and chill out (HR 150-160).

(Thursday, 3 July)
Already off my schedule! I took the day off because I slept in and ended up being tired in the PM when I was going to do my easy ride. I planned a bike ride after the 5k tomorrow, so I'll be plenty busy tomorrow.

(Friday, 4 July)
AM: road 5k in San Marino. With Susan's crowd, I sure felt like I was part of the neighborhood! I went out in about 6.40 or so, slowed to an approximate 21.22. Although, when I think about it, that's not too bad since the hills (Virginia, Oxford) were all after the first mile. And, I mean, I really shouldn't be so hard on myself, since I've been only running once or twice a week. It's faster than I ran at the Turkey Trot in Piedmont this year when I was in much better shape. (But that has way more hills, so maybe I'm just making myself feel better by making the comparison.)

The main point of the run was that SUSAN STILL BEAT ME. That's right folks - as Gustavo put it, "Breeden, what HAPPENED? You still got beat by '2 in 1' ". I say, hey, if a 4-month-pregnant Susan can still beat me, that's no shame. You don't want el nino to lose in his first race! FYI they're pretty sure it's a boy, which is awesome, because Susan said the name they're thinking of for a boy is "Hank" (short for Henry) which is so cool sounding I can't WAIT to meet the kid! I'll have to also suggest some other cool sounding names like "Rocket" and "Spokewrench". Do you guys have any ideas?

In the afternoon I went on a bike ride with Ian and Dave, my legs were a little tired but I felt pretty good considering. We went up Chantry. I was really hot! I gotta watch the hydration these next few days. We stopped at Lucky's on the way back and had delicious, delicious lunch of British pub food.

(Saturday, 5 July)
Great ride today! Went up Wilson with Kangway and Ian. I really didn't know if I was going to make it (especially with them) when we left. My legs felt tired and sore from yesterday. But, I hung in there dropping back and yo-yo-ing a bit especially up to Clear Creek. That was the worst part. Once we got going past Clear Creek, I felt warmed up and my legs felt good. My seat bones were a little uncomfortable, but not the soft parts, more the muscley parts. I am still deciding on the saddle (it's like Megumi's, but one size bigger) because I think some of the discomfort might be due to me just getting used to riding again.

I was really glad to make it to the top - it was nice up there, and it was a nice confidence booster after such a long day yesterday. I should make this a weekly ride.

(Sunday, 6 July)
I checked my mileage last night and it was at 210 (bike) for the week and 15 (run, 2 days) so I decided to take another day off. I slept in to 10! (That's like... almost 12 hours of sleep... yikes! I must have needed it. Today I'm thinking about long-term bike-touring plans. What should I plan for the rest of the summer? I'd appreciate any ideas! I'm wondering if there's a good bike-touring route I could do where there would be camping, not too hot temperatures, and good roads. Here are some things I'd like:

- altitude (for training and coolness)
- good roads (for comfort)
- camping available (or cheat hotels peppered in there)
- mountains
- interesting scenery (if I convince my mom to come along)
