I can't believe I remembered to stop my watch. Should've run faster.

begin Preseason 5.0!

(Monday, 25 August)

Chilled with the folks some more. My legs are a little dead, but not too bad. I took another day off.

(Tuesday, 26 August)
More off. Stuffing myself with the parents' food.

(Wednesday, 27 August)
First day of preseason. It was a little weird to be there but not a student; I have to be really careful not to fall back into the same role of "team captain". It will take a little learning. But, so far I think I'm doing okay. We did the usual Huntington, and I went back for Noduka, which was a pretty funny experience. My legs are feeling good.

(Thursday, 28 August)
Lower Arroyo. I think I'm getting a little sensitive to the plight of the gals in the back; I'm like totally paranoid that they're going to get lost. I think I'm one of those people who can't give directions anymore because they've done runs so many times. Towards the end of the run, Megumi was definitely pushing it (or at least I blame her for doing this) because I was working pretty hard. I think part of the problem is that I haven't really run with other folks much recently, except for Susan and sometimes Ian. The other gals didn't really seem to be bothered though, so it might have just been me being tired.

(Friday, 29 August)
Cannon hills. I think I must be in better shape than I'm giving myself credit for, because these felt a relatively easy exercise in trotting in front of the other girls, and occasionally running with the dudes (Garrett and Ian once each). And, my times were still the same as they were last year, but at a much lower perceived effort level.

However, I was really tired later in the day, so I'm not sure if I'm a wimp who's not used to doing intervals, or if I'm not getting enough sleep.

(Saturday, 30 August)
Patrician. Took it easy with Sam and Stephanie joined us most of the way. Sam was helping me along by the end! I think I got tired because I had to sprint after the group the first couple of miles down California because I left my shoes at home. WTF? I guess that has to happen every once in a while to keep me on my game. Good thing they stopped to stretch at Singer park!

(Sunday, 31 August)
Off, took it really easy. Sleeping in was just what the doctor ordered!

you're right--running feels totally different after graduation...especially repeats. these seem to happen on another "perceived energy level" as you have already observed. in my 2+ years of observations, I think this is due to proper nutrition, good sleep habits, and generally lowered stress levels compared to those experienced by Tech undergrads.

ps thanks for answering my question about your breathing techniques

I totally agree - I wonder if we would be more competitive with other SCIAC schools, even with the exact same runners, if we just had the same stress levels and sleeping habits.
